Matthew Carver’s recent paintings and sculptures engage the illusory urban space of modern cities—places like Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, London and New York, where the artist has travelled in recent years. (Currently, Carver lives and works in Berlin.)
The title of his new show “The Floating World” once described depictions of urban life in Edo (now Tokyo), Osaka and Kyoto. Via imported print images, such work had a key influence on the development of Impressionism. The swishes and swirls of Carver’s night landscapes draw from the style known as anamorphic painting, whose history dates back centuries (think of the anamorphic skull in Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors) but also finds recent echo in contemporary digital imaging.
