The Canadian Art Foundation’s annual auction takes place during our 20th anniversary Gala on September 17. In anticipation, we asked members of our art-advisory committee to select their favourite works on the auction block. We’ll be publishing their selections from September 8 to 12—our auction preview week, when all of the works will be on view at Waddington’s.

Karen Kraven, Knicks and Rangers, 2015.
In Knicks and Rangers, Karen Kraven presents photographs of well-known sports jerseys that at first glance are not recognizable (perhaps due to my lack of interest in sports!) despite being clear representations of the material. This toeing of the line between abstraction and representation is just one of the many elements of her work that keeps me interested in Kraven’s practice.
The re-visioning and elevation of pervasive objects that is happening in Karen Kraven’s work is very appealing to me. The objects mutate as they are presented enlarged, flattened, stretched—they become mesmerizing, almost optical illusions.
