Canadian Art Gallery Hop Vancouver: Panel Discussion

In this video, recorded on Saturday, May 29, 2010, as part of the Canadian Art Gallery Hop in Vancouver, Kitty Scott, director of visual arts at the Banff Centre, and Douglas Fogle, chief curator of the Hammer Museum, joined artists Lisa Anne Auerbach and Althea Thauberger to offer their thoughts on the artist’s role in the world.

Canadian Art Foundation executive director Ann Webb framed the discussion at the 2010 Gallery Hop Vancouver with the following question:

Undeniably, the art world is experiencing an onset of change due to the economic climate and many conversations concerning value content have begun to circulate. As curators working in various cities all over the world in differing curatorial capacities, both independent and institutional, what transformations and adjustments do you see happening to curatorial and artistic practice?

It’s a subject of much debate in the art world and the focus of Creamier, the latest contemporary art overview from Phaidon Press. Scott and Fogle are two of the curators who contributed to Creamier. Auerbach and Thauberger, whose practices range from collaborative performance to community activism, are two of the artists featured in the book.
