Mia Nielsen’s Top Pick at Canadian Art’s Gala Auction

Mia Nielsen, head of cultural programming at the Drake Hotel, knows her art. And she knows a work by Celia Perrin Sidarous that'll be in demand at our gala.

The Canadian Art Foundation’s auction takes place during our 21st annual gala on September 22. In anticipation, we have asked members of our art-advisory committee to select their favourite works on the auction block. We’ll be publishing their selections periodically leading up to our auction preview on September 15, when all of the works will be on view at Waddingtons.

Top Pick for Mia Nielsen, Head of Cultural Programming, Drake Hotel: Celia Perrin Sidarous, Folding fan, hands, Venus, geode and hairstyle, 2015

“Have to say, I’m a bit haunted by Celia Perrin Sidarous’s photo—it’s so many things at the same time. I adore photos, so when an artist comes along who makes the process new for me, I pay attention.

Here, the artist creates a collage in space, using horizontal and vertical surfaces and resealing the composition in a 2-D image. As a result there is something ephemeral and delicate about the composition, like a sudden breeze could send it fluttering across the room in pieces.

Look a little deeper and the elements reveal she’s examining gesture, representation and art history in a piece that has a spontaneous energy, but is deeply rooted in visual history.”
