On February 21, 2013, International Academy of Art Palestine arts director Khaled Hourani spoke via Skype with Art Gallery of Ontario executive director of curatorial affairs Elizabeth Smith following the North American premiere of the documentary Picasso in Palestine at the Reel Artists Film Festival in Toronto. Hourani produced the film, which was later exhibited at Documenta 13.
“Picasso in Palestine” was a project initiated by Hourani which involved the exhibition of Picasso’s 1943 painting Buste de Femme in Ramallah in June 2011. The related film, also titled Picasso in Palestine, follows the project’s development and realization. This includes several significant bureaucratic and logistical obstacles encountered on the painting’s journey from its home at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven to the exhibition space in Ramallah.
In this post-screening conversation, Hourani discusses the political aspects of the project as well as elements of his own artistic practice, among other topics.
