Artist Katy Schimert
This past spring, New York artist Katy Schimert spoke in Toronto for the sixth installment of the Anne Lind International Program, which ran from May 12 to 15, 2008.
In this videocast of the lecture, Schimert discusses her multifaceted practice, from an Alice in Wonderland-themed installation made for an exhibition curated by artist Diana Thater in Munich to her work in ceramics and watercolour on the theme of war to her text pieces, including a letter to Freud and her ongoing interest in mythology.
Katy Schimert works in film, sculpture, drawing, painting and installation. Exhibitions of her work over the past two decades include solo shows at the Renaissance Society, University of Chicago, and the Matrix Gallery, University of California, Berkeley. Her work has also been included in the Whitney and São Paolo biennials.
Since 1989, Schimert has taught as Lecturer in the Sculpture Department at Yale University and as Visiting Professor of Sculpture at both Harvard University and New York University.
Schimert’s work is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Norton Family Foundation; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis, among others. She has shown with David Zwirner Gallery, New York, since 1997.
