Calgary artist Jason de Haan taps into the mysterious restorative energy of New Age crystallography in the exhibition “Overcoming Problems Related to This Planet: Hope, Love, Peace, Healing, Generosity, Purpose, Harmony,” on view at Galerie Sans Nom to February 15. In theory, specific crystal forms have the innate power to refocus an individual’s “vibrational energy system” in a balance of bodily chakras and electromagnetic auras. In his installation, de Haan literally amps up this positive power by setting a collection of 100 charm stones on top of six speakers playing an oscillating frequency determined by the combined vibrations of the crystals. The artist calls it a “gesture of goodwill” that turns the gallery space into a broadcast centre for personal healing. It’s a clever sculptural construction that seriously considers the affirmative potential of belief systems. Whether you actually feel better or not on visiting the exhibition is a question of conviction, but the lasting impact of de Haan’s work is surely in its ability to invoke the power of an open mind.
