From the technological pop phenomena of the iPod and Facebook to the celebrity spectacles of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, western society is captivated more than ever before by the power of youth culture. But if we live in an era that idealizes youth for its freedom, promise and marketability, we must also carefully consider the dangerous implications of an age fraught with anxiety, awkwardness and impulsively radical extremes—like the tragedy of the Columbine massacre or the shootings at Dawson College. Artists Kyla Mallett, Eliza Griffiths, Justine Kurland, Anthony Goicolea, Alex Morrison, Demain Petryshyn, Jeremy Shaw, Janet Werner and Daniel Barrow delve into these certainties and uncertainties in the exhibition “Generation” curated by Catherine Crowston, chief curator and deputy director of the gallery.
