Canadian Art receives three nominations for prestigious National Magazine Awards

Award winners to be announced June 10 at the National Magazine Awards gala in Toronto

Photojournalism & Photo Essay – Donald Weber, Fall 2010
Portrait Photography – Michael Mitchell, Fall 2010
Art Direction for an Entire Issue – Barbara Solowan, Summer 2010
“Being recognized by the National Magazine Awards Foundation is hugely gratifying for us,” says Canadian Art publisher Melony Ward. “These nominations recognize the talent of Canadians working in two cultural worlds: the visual arts and magazines. It’s incredibly satisfying to be able to work with such a talented team of creative contributors, and on behalf of everyone here at Canadian Art, I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to nominated photojournalist Donald Weber, photographer and writer Michael Mitchell and staff designer Barbara Solowan for their outstanding work.”
Award-winning photographer Donald Weber’s harrowing photographic account of police work in the Eastern European criminal underworld was a specially commissioned artist project in the Fall 2010 issue of Canadian Art and received a nomination in the Photojournalism & Photo Essay category.
For each issue, Canadian Art commissions portraits of artists and curators, capturing these cultural figures at work in their studios or in galleries. Michael Mitchell’s photos of Arnaud Maggs in his downtown Toronto studio accompanied Mitchell’s article on the acclaimed 84-year-old artist, which appeared in the Fall 2010 edition. The images were nominated in the Portrait Photography category.
Also nominated for her work is Canadian Art art director Barbara Solowan, in the category of Art Direction for an Entire Issue. The nomination honours Solowan’s design work on the “All About Painting” issue of Canadian Art in Summer 2010.
