Community: Un préambule heard from all 22 symposium participants and was moderated by Misha Gouberman. The conversation participants included Abbas Akhavan, artist, Toronto; Isabelle Alfonsi, Co-Director, Galerie Marcelle Alix, Paris; Diane Borsato, artist, Toronto; Jessica Bradley, Director, Jessica Bradley Gallery, Toronto; Vincent Gonzalvez, Project Manager for Visual Arts, Institut français, Paris; Louise Hervé and Chloé Maillet, artists, Paris; and Guillaume Leblon, artist and member of castillo/corrales, Paris; among other art professionals.
The Ecology of an Art Scene was part of the Canadian Art Foundation International Speaker Series and was presented in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Toronto as part of Paris-Toronto, a 10-month series highlighting contemporary art from France in the Greater Toronto Area. The symposium was sponsored by BMO Financial Group, with support from the Institut français.
The brochure description for this conversation was as follows: A lively and interactive discussion addressing the notion of community as it is taken up in contemporary art practices, institutions and critical discourse. Is contemporary art’s interest in community authentic or a passing fascination? Who benefits from this interest? Does special attention to community play a role in the development of an artist’s practice, in institutional innovation, or in the expansion of the art market?
