Montreal artist Bill Vazan is of the first generation of conceptual artists. An inveterate world traveller, Vazan, since the late 1960s, has built a photo-based practice dealing with the investigation of boundaries. Many of the photographs are based on real-world sculptural works—black tape on a gallery floor, footprints in sand, aligned stones on Easter Island—but Vazan also engages with the inventive reworking of maps and documents. His abiding interest is the abstract construction of territories and the power relations that lie behind them. This Vazan show—originally curated by Marie-Josée Jean for VOX in Montreal—is a thoughtful follow-up to the Art Gallery of Windsor’s 2006 conceptual art and photography exhibition on the work of Iain Baxter.
