“Hi, I’m Marcel Dzama. I’m directing this piece. Welcome to my rehearsal,” says performer and writer Amy Sedaris in this new video produced by the New York City Ballet. The Winnipeg-born and Brooklyn-based Dzama is known for his dark, fabulist, idiosyncratic artworks. This winter, he will collaborate with the New York City Ballet via installation and performance.
In this video, Dzama introduces us to the whimsical project: a drawing, sculpture and a video for the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, part of the NYCB’s Art Series and featuring Sedaris leading one half of a duelling chess game, seemingly inspired by Marcel Duchamp and Oskar Schlemmer. In addition, Dzama has designed the costumes and sets for NYCB Resident Choreographer Justin’s Peck’s new ballet, The Most Incredible Thing, an adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen story. Dzama is the first artist to simultaneously contribute to the Art Series project and to the mise-en-scène of a concurrent production.
