In the Studio with Jamiyla Lowe

“A lot of my work can be really silly,” says Lowe, “even though it's a little bit dark sometimes, it's never heavy. If I'm spending so much time with something, I want it to make me feel good.”

In this video, artist Jamiyla Lowe invites Canadian Art to her Toronto studio, where she discusses the playful characters and imagined worlds of her drawings and prints. Her work places invented creatures in splendorous, futuristic single-panel drawings and illustrated printed matter. After graduating from OCAD, and discouraged by limited paths of entry into the art world, she instead forged her own way— Lowe now regularly shows and sells her work and printed matter at art fairs nationally and internationally.
