On December 30, two prominent members of Canada’s art community were among 33 civilians appointed to become Officers of the Order of Canada.
Curator Roald Nasgaard was one of the honourees. Nasgaard was chief curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario from 1978 to 1993 and is author of the 2007 volume Abstract Painting in Canada: A History. A major show on the Automatistes which he curated debuted in 2009 and toured many venues since then.
Artist Ian Wallace was another honouree. Known internationally for his innovative bridging of painting and photography, the Vancouver artist has influenced many at home and abroad. A survey of his work is currently on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967 to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 45 years, more than 5,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the order.
