Today, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art announced that the Toronto philanthropic group Partners in Art is the recipient of the $25,000 MOCCA Award for 2013.
The award recognizes PIA’s 10-year history of creating collaborations with art institutions, as well as its educational initiatives aimed at raising awareness and understanding of contemporary art. PIA has raised and distributed more than $800,000 towards these and related projects, including support of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s artist-in-residence program, publication programs at MOCCA, and online educational resources at Canadian Art.
PIA’s 75 members are to be recognized at a gala on April 13 at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
The biennial MOCCA Award was established in 2007 to honour a Canadian active in the field of visual arts for innovation, accomplishment or contribution over time, or for a specific project that has national or international significance.
Michael Snow received the award for 2007, Matthew Teitelbaum received award for 2009 and Edward Burtynsky received the award for 2011.
In a release, current PIA co-chairs Yvonne Fleck and Mimi Joh stated, “We’re proud to say that since our beginning 10 years ago, PIA has helped change the contemporary Canadian art scene by forging a type of patron involvement that includes a collaboration of ideas and an active engagement with chosen institutions like MOCCA. We look forward to creating future collaborations in the years to come.”
