Marie-Eve Beaulieu has won the 2013 Sylvie and Simon Blais Award for Emerging Visual Artists.
Beaulieu, a graduate student at UQAM, will receive $2,000 and a solo exhibition at Galerie Simon Blais in January 2014. Her recent work focuses on gesture and process in painting and drawing.
The award, initiated in 2009, aims to promote and publicize the work of emerging artists by recognizing a graduate student completing an MFA program at a Quebec university.
Other finalists included Andréanne Godin of Concordia University, Philippe Léonard of Concordia University and Françoise Ségard of UQAM.
The jury members for this year’s award were Diane Charbonneau, curator of contemporary decorative arts at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Marie-Eve Charron, journalist at Le Devoir; Guy Rodrigue, collector; Irene F. Whittome, artist; and Simon Blais, galleriest and president of the Sylvie and Simon Blais Foundation.
