The 2013 curatorial panel has announced that the 25 artists vying for the 2013 Sobey are:
For West Coast and the Yukon: Sonny Assu, Cedric Bomford, Isabelle Pauwels, Mark Soo and Brendan Tang.
For Prairies and the North: Amalie Atkins, Mark Clintberg, Brenda Draney, Simon Hughes and Divya Mehra.
For Ontario: Diane Borsato, Brendan Fernandes, David R. Harper, Kristiina Lahde and Duane Linklater.
For Quebec: Anthony Burnham, Jacynthe Carrier, Peter Flemming, Pascal Grandmaison and Nadia Myre.
For Atlantic: Tamara Henderson, Stephen Kelly, Lisa Lipton, Michael Pittman and Hans Wendt.
Each year, the Sobey Art Award is awarded to an artist age 40 and under who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. Regions are determined by either an artist’s place of residence or place of birth. A total of $70,000 in prize money is awarded annually; $50,000 to the winner and $5,000 to the other four finalists.
Members of the 2013 curatorial panel selecting the shortlist and jurying the ultimate award are Mireille Eagan, curator of Canadian art, the Rooms; Marie Claude Landry, curator of contemporary art, Musée de Joliette; Melissa Bennett, curator of contemporary art, Art Gallery of Hamilton; Jesse McKee, curator, Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff Centre; and Charo Neville, curator, Kamloops Art Gallery.
The 2013 shortlist of the Sobey Art Award will be announced in late June, and the winner will be announced at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on October 9.
