The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Sobey Art Foundation today announced the five artists who have been shortlisted for the 2012 Sobey Art Award. They are Eleanor King (Atlantic); Raphaëlle de Groot (Quebec); Derek Sullivan (Ontario); Jason de Haan (Prairies and the North); and Gareth Moore (West Coast and the Yukon).

Established in 2002, the Sobey Art Award is awarded to a Canadian artist age 40 and under who has exhibited in a public or commercial gallery within 18 months of being nominated. $50,000 goes to the winner and $5,000 is awarded to each of the other finalists.

The curatorial panel for this year’s award, which decided this shortlist and earlier longlist, consists of David Diviney, curator of exhibitions, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia; Louise Déry, director, Galerie de l’UQAM; David Liss, artistic director, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art; Ryan Doherty, curator, Southern Alberta Art Gallery; and Bruce Grenville, senior curator, Vancouver Art Gallery.

Work by the shortlisted artists will be shown in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, opening on October 24. The 10th Anniversary Sobey Art Award winner will be announced there on November 16.
