The Canadian Art Foundation is pleased to announce that Ashley McLellan is the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Art Editorial Residency.
The $7,000 prize has been awarded yearly to selected Canadian post-secondary students since 2004. The winner works at Canadian Art for two months in the summer, honing writing skills, researching editorial material, learning production procedures and helping to produce exhibition reviews in print and online.
Ashley McLellan grew up in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and is now based in Vancouver, where she recently completed a BA in anthropology and art and culture studies at Simon Fraser University. She is an aspiring writer and editor, and she plans to attend graduate school after taking a year off. Her recent publications include an article in The Peak and a text for an exhibition at SFU Art Gallery.
The Canadian Art Foundation received many strong applications for the 2012 Canadian Art Editorial Residency program and would like to thank all those who applied.
This introduction to art-magazine publishing and writing is intended to foster new editorial and critical talent. The prize is selected on the basis of one 500-word review of a contemporary art exhibition, a list of titles of recent academic writing on art and a one-page CV.
Concordia University graduate Tess Edmonson was our 2011 Editorial Resident. Among her achievements during the mentorship was her interview of General Idea’s surviving member, AA Bronson, about the group’s career retrospective “Haute Culture” at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
