The Nuit Blanche concept continues to grow throughout Canada, with Calgary being the latest city to get on board.
Today, Nuit Blanche Calgary launched its website detailing the inaugural fest’s program on September 15, which is small compared to events in Montreal and Toronto, but is looking to grow in coming years.
Quebec trio BGL leads the way with a free carousel powered by parkour athletes, a work akin to the one currently featured by the group at “Oh, Canada” at the Massachussets Museum of Contemporary Art. Calgary artist Caitlind Brown plans to present a cloud comprised of 5,000 light bulbs, while Theo Sims’s ersatz Belfast pub, The Candahar—which has already been on view at the Alberta College of Art and Design for several months—will stay open late. Performance is also emphasized, with Calgary artist collective Sophie Farewell directing town criers to take viewers’ personal news viral.
Parallel events include Derek Besant at the MOCA Calgary, Truck’s bike-in film projection at City Hall and extended hours at Stride Gallery and the New Gallery.
Calgary’s first Nuit Blanche will take place on September 15 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
