Last week, Tiziana La Melia was announced as winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition at a ceremony held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where an exhibition of the competition’s finalists is on view until October 8. (Finalists will also be exhibited at Art Toronto later in the month.) In this video, editor Richard Rhodes speaks with La Melia about her winning painting, Hanging on to the part—a unique work combining figuration and abstraction, which equally embraces painting’s capacity for formal experimentation and for playful humour.
