News in Brief: BMO 1st Art! Winners, Ottawa Art Gallery Expands, Becca Taylor Joins Urban Shaman

This week, winners of the BMO 1st Art! Competition were announced, the Ottawa Art Gallery's expansion began and Becca Taylor joined Urban Shaman Gallery.

On Tuesday, winners of the 13th-annual BMO 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition were announced. The 12 regional winners, selected from 263 entries, will each receive $5,000, while the national winner, Tamara Himmelspach of Calgary, wins $10,000. An exhibition of work by the regional and national winner opens in October at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery in Toronto.

Expansion of the Ottawa Art Gallery and Arts Court is officially underway after a funding agreement was reached for the $100 million project with the City of Ottawa, EBC Inc., DevMcGill and Groupe Germain. The gallery expansion is slated to open in late 2017, with the Arts Court and other developments following in 2018.

Artist and curator Becca Taylor is the new Aboriginal curator-in-residence at Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery in Winnipeg. Taylor was the art program coordinator for the North End Arts Centre and co-organized the exhibition “Walking Beyond” in Winnipeg. Taylor will curate at Urban Shaman throughout 2015–16.

The Toronto Arts Foundation announced six recipients for the second round of the RBC Arts Access Fund on Wednesday: Dana Prieto, Nadia Gurkova, Alexander Usquiano, Aitak Sorahitalab, Banoo Zan and Erica Parilla. Geared towards “newcomer artists looking to jump-start their community-engaged arts projects,” the RBC Arts Access Fund distributes micro awards of up to $1,500.
