Former Art Papers Editor Becomes AEAC Curator

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston has announced critic, editor and art historian Sylvie Fortin as its curator of contemporary art for a six-month term starting immediately. The appointment follows the December 2012 announcement of the gallery’s longtime curator of contemporary art, Jan Allen, as acting director.

In addition to serving as editor-in-chief and executive director/editor at the Atlanta-based journal Art Papers from 2004 to 2012, the Quebec-raised Fortin made a name for herself as a curator throughout the 1990s, including posts at La Chambre Blanche in Quebec City, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and Oboro in Montreal. In 2010, she curated the fifth edition of the Quebec City biennial Manif d’art under the theme “Catastrophe? Quelle Catastrophe!”

The next six months are a time of transition for the AEAC, and gallery representatives say it is not known at this moment whether Fortin’s and Allen’s new positions will extend beyond that period.
