This week, 52 artists were announced as finalists for the Salt Spring National Art Prize. They were chosen from a pool of some 1,200 applicants.

The prize, awarded every two years, offers a first prize of $15,000 plus an artist residency. It also provides three juror’s choice awards of $3,000 each; three people’s choice awards of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000; a $2,000 award for Salt Spring Island artists; and a $1,000 additional prize for a painted artwork.

This year, the award winners will be announced on October 19 at the site of the finalists’ exhibition on Salt Spring Island. (That exhibition will run September 21 to October 21.) The prize is a project of the Salt Spring Arts Council.

Finalists are chosen based on consideration of a single artwork and a brief artist statement. Jurors for the prize this year include author and critic David Balzer, artist Sandra Meigs and curator at SFU Galleries cheyanne turions.
