Finalists Announced for RBC Canadian Painting Competition

Fifteen artists from across Canada selected for consideration

This morning, 15 finalists were announced for the 20th annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition. The winner, to be announced on September 18, will receive $25,000 and a residency at Banff Centre for the Arts. Two honourable mentions will each receive $15,000, and the remaining 12 finalists will receive $2,500 each.

The finalists were chosen from some 500 entries from across the country by a seven-person jury. The jury for this year’s prize consists of experts from across Canada’s art community, as well as an international juror. The jury members are: Natasha Chaykowski, researcher, writer and curator, Calgary; Mark Igloliorte, artist and assistant professor, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver; Crystal Mowry, senior curator, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery; Erin Stump, director, Erin Stump Projects, Toronto; Alexandra McIntosh, director of programs and exhibitions, Fogo Island Arts; Julie Trudel, artist and assistant professor at Université du Québec à Montréal; and Cynthia Daignault, artist, Brooklyn.

Developed through RBC’s Emerging Artists Project, this competition supports the careers of young contemporary artists. Canadian Art is a long-standing partner in this competition, which has supported 250 emerging visual artists over the past two decades.
