The Hnatyshyn Foundation’s $25,000 prize for outstanding achievement by a Canadian mid-career artist has been awarded to Dana Claxton.

The award win is the latest in a significant year for the Vancouver-based artist. Her work is currently part of a group exhibition at Kunsthalle Mulhouse in France and is featured in the new book 500 Women Artists by Phaidon. Claxton’s work is also highly visible at the inaugural Toronto Biennial. And just 12 months ago, “Fringing the Cube,” a major solo survey of her work, opened at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Today the Hnatyshyn Foundation also announced the winner of its $15,000 award for curatorial excellence, and its TD Bank Group Awards of $10,000 each for an emerging artist and an emerging curator.

The winner of the award for curatorial excellence is Catherine Bédard, who currently sits on the patronage committee for the Fondation des Artistes in Paris.

The emerging artist award goes to Walter Scott, and the emerging curator prize to Tarah Hogue.

The William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes of $5,000 each for young artists, also offered by the Hnatyshyn Foundation, go to Annie Beach, Evin Collis and Niamh Dooley.

Past winners of the Hnatyshyn mid-career Artist Prize include Stan Douglas, Geoffrey Farmer, Ken Lum and Rebecca Belmore, among others.
