This morning, three artists were shortlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Photography Award. The award describes itself as “the largest peer-nominated and peer-reviewed celebration of excellence in Canadian contemporary photography.”

The shortlisted artists are:

Shannon Bool, based in Berlin, Germany

Althea Thauberger, based in North Vancouver, British Columbia

Stephen Waddell, based in Vancouver, British Columbia

The winner of the prize will receive $50,000, and will exhibit in a solo show at the 2020 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival. For that show, a related catalogue will be published by Steidl. Two runners-up will receive $10,000 each.

The shortlist was narrowed from a longlist of 11 released in late February. The final winner will be announced May 7 at the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto.

The jurors for the 2019 prize are artist Edward Burtynsky, writer and curator Candice Hopkins, artist Mark Lewis, and editor, curator and writer Brian Sholis.

Past winners of the Scotiabank Photography Award include Moyra Davey, Shelley Niro and Mark Ruwedel.
