Inspired by the theme of our Fall 2017 issue, “The Idea of History,” this discussion explores Black Canadian histories from the perspective of our panellists’ artistic practices. Join Canadian Art’s assistant editor Merray Gerges for a conversation with associate editor Yaniya Lee and multidisciplinary artists Deanna Bowen and Michéle Pearson Clarke, all contributors to the Fall 2017 issue.
Deanna Bowen is a Toronto-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice examines race, migration, historical writing and authorship. She is a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow in film/video and recipient of the 2014 William H. Johnson Prize.
Michèle Pearson Clarke is a Trinidad-born artist who works in photography, film, video and installation. Using archival, performative and process-oriented strategies, her work explores the personal and political possibilities afforded by considering experiences of emotions related to longing and loss.
Yaniya Lee is a writer and researcher based in Toronto. She is Canadian Art‘s associate editor and is the 2017-18 writer in residence at Gallery 44.
Merray Gerges studied art history at NSCAD and journalism at King’s in Halifax. She was the 2015 writer-in-residence at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Canadian Art‘s 2016 editorial resident, where she is now assistant editor.

Artist Project

Dimensional lumber, hollow steel pipe, concrete cast in dirt, various found objects
Part 1960s radical architecture model turned furniture, part Kensington Market produce stand, this project is constructed out of humble, everyday building materials that link everyday life and personal narrative, pragmatic space and use value.
Christian Kliegel’s practice spans the disciplines of art and architecture. He graduated from Emily Carr University and the Masters of Architecture program at the University of British Columbia. His work revolves around the relationship between narrative, material and site. He lives and works in Toronto, ON.

Roche Bobois Artist-Designed Cushions
At this year’s Art Toronto, Roche Bobois is launching a special Canada 150 project that will give their iconic Mah Jong cushion a twist. Six leading Canadian artists have each designed a cushion in their signature style, which will be on display at Art Toronto. After being a Feature Project at the fair, Roche Bobois will auction the pieces in support of Canadian Art. Cushions will be designed by:
