Working in Art and Activism

Lately, news has been dominated by the worldwide “99%” protests. Now, a new video from our education site looks at art and activism. Listen in as Allyson Mitchell, Edward Burtynsky, Carol Condé, Karl Beveridge and other artists share their insights.

In recent weeks, news headlines have been dominated by protests taking place around the globe. Now, our latest video looks at the connections between art and activism. “I came to making art through activism,” Toronto artist Allyson Mitchell says in the video. Filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal adds, “I think that art in general, as an arena of inquiry into the human condition, has a very special capacity to move people not only intellectually, but viscerally.”

More insights are shared by collaborative duo Carol Condé and Karl Beveridge (who have been working on projects related to Toronto’s G20 experience), photographer Edward Burtynsky, performer Erika Batdorf and photojournalist Rita Leistner.
