MAIN SPACE

behind the curtain cultivated by Morgan Sears-Williams
Maddie Alexander, Dana Buzzee, Faith Alexandra Marie, Adrienne Huard, Wren Tian-Morris, and B.G-Osborne

This exhibition is currently in partnership with Dames Making Games (DMG) Toronto.

“behind the curtain” interrogates the overt and covert censorship that 2SLGBTQIA+ artists face through institutions, organizations or social media. Through text, video and installation, Beck G-Osborne, Maddie Alexander, Wren Tian-Morris and Dana Buzzee speak to instances of refusal by institutions and the vulnerabilities of sharing their embodied experiences. Accompanied by an online publication with writings by Adrienne Huard and Faith, the exhibition seeks to create an exchange about how many 2SLGBTQIA+ artists work are often deemed as not digestible for the ‘general public’.

PROJECT SPACE

mâsikîskâpoy
Megan Feheley
Essay by Kayla Carter

“mâsikîskâpoy” is an installation by interdisciplinary Ililiw artist Megan Feheley that contemplates what occurs when access to land and knowledge transference between generations is interrupted by colonization. Tobacco ties are frozen in ice, suspended from a chain, above a blanket of cedar boughs. The work melts and seeps into the space, calling into being a collaboration with land and time; questioning repeatedly how to heal a rupture such as the colonial legacies intergenerational trauma has inflicted on Indigenous people. mâsikîskâpoy also articulates this anxiety in the face of climate collapse, another arm of ongoing colonial violence, and a common theme throughout Feheley’s practice.

WINDOW SPACE

To Save / To Make
Jasmine Cardenas
Essay by Alexia Bréard-Anderson

“I grew up watching my mother cook with achiote almost every day. Achiote seeds, commonly used in Mexican, South American and Caribbean cuisine, dyed our food a vibrant yellow-orange, leaving a deep mark in my memory.” “To Save/To Make” is a mixed media installation, using achiote as its foundation. This natural non-lightfast pigment acts as glue; bridging together Jasmine Cardenas’ lived experiences, working through anxieties, contemplating rituals, and navigating through dual identities. This artwork acts as a self-portrait, transitory and eventually fading in the sun.

EXTERNAL SPACE

HANBOK/한복
Enna Kim
Essay by Lucy Fang

“HANBOK/한복 explores the intergenerational and cultural gap existent within immigrant parents and their children through textiles and dance. With my mother’s sewing machine, I carefully fabricated a hanbok (한복) ,a Korean traditional costume, to represent the pieces of my constructed and hyphenated identity. I use this digital space to create a speculative narrative animation between me and my parents, participating in a reciprocal exchange that extends beyond language. As the animation is projected onto my garment, my body becomes an essential part of merging my digital and physical identities, piercing through and with time and space.”
