Editors' Comment

Born in 1927, Dorothy Knowles has been one of Canada’s most prolific and accomplished painters for decades—though the contemporary art scene hasn’t always recognized that. Luckily, the tide on the latter is starting to turn, with her oeuvre in oil, acrylic, watercolour, charcoal and pastel currently being honoured at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon. (That museum notes Knowles is not only known for prairie landscapes; she also graduated from the renowned Goldsmiths art school in London in 1951.) Still, Knowles is particularly known for her careful, meticulous and yet emotive takes on prairie landscapes, a topic that will also be well appreciated in Calgary, where this show opens September 22 and runs to October 10.
