Editors' Comment
In this exhibition, two artists revisit forgotten histories at a heritage museum site. Cindy Mochizuki dives into researching the overlooked work of Muriel Kitagawa, a Japanese Canadian writer who was actively writing and publishing during the corresponding era of the Roedde’s print businesses. “Kitagawa’s editorial writing and unpublished manuscripts speak to pre- and post-war Vancouver, particularly the injustices of the Canadian government’s policies towards Japanese Canadians,” says curator Katherine Dennis. Diyan Achjadi is revisiting her 2015 Java Toile series to create a new site-specific installation of prints that riff off the wallpaper patterns throughout the house, grappling with design, colonization and resistance.
