In the Studio with Valérie Blass

“I try as much as possible to push through the constraints I’ve set up for myself, to push as far as possible into something that is very experimental. ”

In 2017, Quebec sculptor Valérie Blass won the prestigious Gershon Iskowitz Prize, which includes a $50,000 award and a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Past winners include Liz Magor, General Idea, Brian Jungen and Shuvinai Ashoona. Here, in her Montreal studio, the artist talks about her sculpture practice and her exhibition “Le parlement des invisibles,” on view at the AGO through December 1, 2019.
