25 Artists Longlisted for Sobey Art Award

A top prize of $100,000 will awarded to the winner on November 15 at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton

This morning, 25 Canadian artists were longlisted for the 2019 Sobey Art Award.

A top prize of $100,000 will awarded to the winner on November 15, and $25,000 to each of four shortlisted artists. One shortlisted artist will also receive a residency at Fogo Island Arts.

Each of the 20 longlisted artists who do not proceed to the shortlist—which is announced June 12—will receive $2,000. Three of the longlisted artists will also be selected to participate in an international residency program of three to six months. An exhibition of the Sobey Art Award finalists will be on view from October 5, 2019, to January 5, 2020, at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, where the winner will also be announced in November.

The artists were chosen by a jury consisting of National Gallery of Canada senior curator Josée Drouin-Brisebois; Dalhousie Art Gallery director/curator Peter Dykhuis; National Bank Collection curator Jo-Ann Kane; independent curator, artist and writer Swapnaa Tamhane; Art Gallery of Alberta curator Lindsey Sharman; Contemporary Art Gallery executive director Nigel Prince; and Kunsthal Charlottenborg curator Henriette Bretton-Meyer.
