Must See This Week: July 30 to August 5, 2015

Lots of great art exhibitions open across the country this week. Here are our recommendations. (And remember to visit our Exhibition Finder for worthwhile shows that are already open.)


Painter Stanzie Tooth, 2015 recipient of the Joseph Plaskett Award, opens a show at Karsh-Masson Gallery on August 1. At Studio Sixty Six, emerging artist Jordan Clayton gives a talk on July 30 at 6 p.m. in conjunction with his current show, “A Dialogue with Taxonomy.” Saw Gallery stays up late (all the way from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.) on July 31 to mark the opening of “Big Bang” with a fairly major reception.


Truck’s +15 Project Window turns into a swarming hive of god’s eyes, hand-fashioned in the hundreds by Calgary artist Sally Raab and motion-activated by passersby. The interactive installation “Perpetual Inventory” begins August 3.


At the Cinematheque, the film works of Ute and Detel Aurand, Julia Feyrer and Tamara Henderson are brought together in the screening “Toying with String,” which screens August 5. As part of the Contemporary Art Gallery’s artist-in-residence program, Keg de Souza will run an “urban foraging expedition” that involves jam, local foods and effects of colonization at the Burrard Marina Field House on August 1 at 3 p.m. and again on August 2 at 11 a.m.


Caroline Mauxion takes up the favoured colour trend of the last few years, ombre, in her photography and video show at Galerie Simon Blais, opening August 1. Darling Foundry holds an evening of performances, featuring Maude S. Pilon and Simon Brown, Christophe Barbeau and Hugo Nadeau on July 30 beginning at 7 p.m.


Architecture in flux is the focus of “New Monuments Forget the Future,” a group show featuring work by Luis Jacob, James Nizam, Renée Van Halm and others, opening at Birch Contemporary July 30 at 6 p.m. Three shows open at Xpace on July 30 (with a fourth following shortly behind on August 4), including “Girl Germs,” a show of feminist work that gets a little crafty, and Daniele Dennis’s exploration of the black body in “Tradition.” On July 30 at 6 p.m., Red Head Gallery hosts a reception for their current show, “Dead Machines,” which features a collaborative project by the Toronto Printmaking Coalition.


Kirsty Templeton Davidge’s paintings take a dip into memory (and its representation) in “Anamnesis: Recollection & Perception,” which goes on view at Peter Robertson Gallery on August 1.


The “Dog Days of Summer” are nearly upon us, a fact that ViewPoint Gallery is capitalizing on its upcoming group show, which begins August 4.


The Plug In ICA holds “Native North America,” an evening of performance, discussion and film dedicated to Indigenous art on August 5 beginning at 7 p.m. Participants include musician Shingoose, David McLeod from NCI FM and Vancouver-based music historian and producer Kevin “Sipreano” Howes. Erika Dueck’s sculptural work—highlighted as one of Canadian Art’s top picks from the Papier15 fair—has a closing reception at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art Gallery on July 30 at 4 p.m. Contemporary ceramic work, by Marcel Dzama, Brendan Tang and others, is foregrounded in “Play, Precarity and Survival,” which opens at Ace Art Inc. on July 30 at 7 p.m.


Saskatoon abstract painters get a showing at Art Placement this week in “Abject Abstract,” which features Allysha Larsen, David Stonhouse, Jon Vaughn and Levi Nicholat, opening July 31 at 7 p.m.


The Wandering Albatross, a touring artist-book workshop and performance organized by One Night Stand and artist-book library Also As Well Too (profiled recently by Daniel Joyce), travels to the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. The book-making workshop and performance take place on July 31, at 5 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
