The touring survey exhibition John Kissick: the Boom Bits covers the last five years in the abstract painter’s critically acclaimed practice. It includes two major works from the well-known Groovefucker series that toured Canada in 2010-12, along with large canvasses from the Dissonant Groove exhibition of 2012 and his most recent excursions into glitter in the series Sugar Won’t Work in 2014 (cited by editor Rick Rhodes in Canadian Art Magazine as one of the top 3 exhibitions in Canada in 2014.)
Two new paintings, “The Chatham Re-mix” and “Re-mix No. 15” were executed during his recent residency at the Thames Art Gallery. The survey of 9 paintings and 3 prints traces the artist’s recent development of hybrid pictorial motifs and art historical references through the dual lenses of contemporary pop culture and formal abstraction. The exhibition catalogue includes essays by Jennifer Rudder and Pete Smith.
Known primarily as a painter and writer, John Kissick has an extensive exhibition record, with over 30 solo exhibitions in Canada, the US, and Germany to his credit. His paintings have been featured in important survey exhibitions on contemporary painting, and are held in many private and public collections.
John is the author of Art: Context and Criticism (1992). He served as editor of The Penn State Journal of Contemporary Criticism (1990–95) and was a regular contributor to the New Art Examiner (1990–2000). As a critic and essayist, he has written catalogue essays and articles for periodicals. He has held various academic posts, including Head of Critical Studies at Penn State University’s School of Visual Arts; Dean of the Faculty of Art at the Ontario College of Art & Design (now OCAD University, 2000–03); and Director of the School of Fine Arts & Music at the University of Guelph (2003–14).
