Jennifer Hornyak, Magenta Flower with Red and Blue, oil on canvas, 48” x 51”, 2016
Jennifer Hornyak is known for her distinctive, colourful and highly textured paintings that walk a fine line between figuration and abstraction. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, she creates work that is both intimate and universal. Hornyak builds a structure for each painting with colour and texture, with pale and deep hues to define negative space and subject matter. Her paintings of flowers, she makes clear, are not still lifes; rather they are abstract responses to objects and forms that yield flowers as the result of watching and waiting. Born in England, Hornyak studied at the Grimsby School of Art before coming to Canada. For more than forty years, her work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries across North America, at international art fairs, and in many corporate collections. She works and lives in Montreal.
