The theme of this exhibition—which features work by Emily Carr University of Art and Design instructors—focuses on the relationship between labour and creative practice, inspired by “the challenging working conditions faculty face at this institution.”

Editors' Comment

“Emily Carr has more than half of its classes taught by faculty who don’t know if they’ll teach next semester.” This is but one of the wall texts for the exhibition “The Work of the Work,” and it alone says a lot. Following on Non-regular, a 2018 report about the precarity of academic labour, it’s well known that at Emily Carr University, as at many other universities and post-secondary institutions in Canada, contract labour is very much the norm. And it’s known that that can impact student learning conditions as well as instructor teaching conditions—and, by extension, artist-instructor creating conditions. In sum, it will likely be compelling to see what kind of pointed artworks are highlighted in “The Work of the Work.” —Leah Sandals
