Montreal commercial galleries have a commendable tradition of organizing thematic shows of their gallery artists for the dog days of summer. As is clear from the current Quebec Triennial exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Galerie Donald Browne is one of the hot galleries for new talent. In “Blood, Sweat and Tears,” Winston Churchill’s phrase for steadfast toil and resistance finds new life in the works of Paul Bureau, Sorel Cohen, Michel de Broin, Charles Stankievech and Eve K. Tremblay. Cohen is a standout with her 1980 photo suite After Bacon/Muybridge: coupled figures/Whizzer leg toss, which reprises a wrestling manoeuver as a set of elegant, slow-shutter, blurred figure studies. The textured surfaces of Bureau’s paintings and ceramics attest to their own kind of labour and love, as do Tremblay and de Broin’s droll Honeymoon photographs.
