The Canadian Art Foundation could win $25,000 for programming in a new social-media initiative organized by RBC, which allows art lovers to vote for their favourite arts organization. The Canadian Art Foundation is the only visual-arts organization in the running. Voting ends on February 27 at 5 p.m. EST.
The RBC Canadian Painting Competition is product of a partnership between RBC and the Canadian Art Foundation, which publishes Canadian Art.
According to Jill Birch, CEO of the Canadian Art Foundation, “Partnering with the RBC Canadian Painting Competition for the past 16 years has enhanced the Canadian Art Foundation’s ability to encourage innovation in painting for emerging artists from across Canada. In addition to bringing their work to the attention of art enthusiasts, we have also been able to develop programs and educational experiences to support the needs of these artists.”
“Additional support of this partnership would allow the Canadian Art Foundation to reach a larger number of deserving artists, and help advance their professional practices,” explained Birch.
Since 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition has provided over 200 artists with an opportunity to exhibit their work on a national scale. In addition to the purchase prize awarded the winners, all finalists also receive invaluable exposure to and insight from jurors, mentors and industry insiders.
“Each year the Canadian Art Foundation facilitates the jurying process among a distinguished panel of critics, curators and artists,” noted Birch. “Together with RBC, we design a unique symposium to support the next phase of development for these emerging artists.”
The RBC Canadian Painting Competition is open to all artists who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, who are in the early stages of their career (defined as the first five years). Last year, more than 600 artists applied to the competition, and 15 finalists were chosen from across the country.
The 2014 winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition was Vancouver-based Tiziana La Melia. Previous finalists include Colleen Heslin, Vanessa Maltese and Rebecca Brewer.
RBC and the Canadian Art Foundation opened the call for submissions to the 2015 RBC Canadian Painting Competition on Wednesday. Applications close at 4 p.m. EST on May 6, 2015.
