Nestled between large, industrial spaces that house electronic-waste disposal units and dairy-distribution services, Naomi Yasui’s sunlit studio looks out over the smokestacks and parking lots of Toronto’s west end. Her shared studio space is filled with buckets of broken bits of ceramics, sponges of all shades and sizes and three electric kilns.
Yasui stumbled into pottery after finding the ceramics studio the quietest, most comfortable space when she studied material art and design at the Ontario College of Art and Design. And, since this initial foray into the medium, she’s shown at galleries including Erin Stump Projects and MULHERIN in Toronto, and Battat Contemporary in Montreal, and was granted an artist-in-residence placement at Guldagergaard in Skælskor, Denmark, in 2014.
