dOCUMENTA (13): Kassel and Beyond

Every five years, artists and art audiences from around the globe descend on the museums, parks and public spaces of Kassel, Germany, for what is arguably one of the most anticipated and influential events in the art-world calendar: documenta. For our Summer 2012 magazine feature “Siege + Hope,” art writer Daniel Baird travelled to Rome to meet dOCUMENTA (13) artistic director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev in advance of this summer’s big exhibition. The article provides an in-depth look at the work of the American-born curator and her strategies for Kassel, which have included a worldwide schedule of pre-exhibition events and publications organized in collaboration with a tight group of what Christov-Bakargiev calls “core agents,” among them the Banff Centre’s Kitty Scott.

dOCUMENTA (13) opened in Kassel on June 9 featuring works by hundreds of international artists, including Berlin- and BC-based Canadian duo Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller; a Vancouver contingent of Geoffrey Farmer (whose sprawling Leaves of Grass installation has quickly become a defining work in the show), Brian Jungen (with a public dog park cum agility course) and Gareth Moore (who, over the past year, has developed a neo-utopian commune/compound in Karlsaue Park); and Sackville-born, Stockholm-based artist Tamara Henderson, who has a film on view at the Fridericianum. Historical works by Emily Carr also make an appearance, with seven classic paintings from the Vancouver Art Gallery collection on view at the Neue Galerie. Some other Canadians involved in dOCUMENTA (13)’s various activities are artist Ian Wallace, critic and novelist Aaron Peck, artist Duane Linklater, National Gallery of Canada curator Candice Hopkins and Montreal-born, Chicago-based art critic Lori Waxman.
